Scope/Job Description – Veterinarian, Animal House

Position : Veterinarian – Animal House/SRA/Research Officer
Organization : client of NIKHIL.
Function/Unit : Animal House.
Department : Research Biology.
Desired Qualification: M.V.Sc. (Nutrition/Genetics/Breeding/Pathology/Pharmacology).
Experience : Minimum 3 to 4 year in a similar role.

Role
- Breeding, maintenance and supply of small laboratory animals.

Responsibilities
- Handling of common laboratory animals such as rats, mice, guinea pigs and rabbits of breeding nucleus as well as animals for experiments.
- Conduct animal breeding, housing, maintenance, procurement and supply of animals and breeding nucleus as per animal welfare guidelines and IAEC approved animal experiment requirements.
- Supervision of cage changing, watering and feeding procedures in breeding and stock animals.
- Conduct parasitological investigations, laboratory animal health monitoring and examination to determine nature and cause of disease.
- Collection of samples for microbiological and chemical analyses in diet, bedding and water and ensure they are conducted on a routine basis. Also, responsible for fixing the standards and maximum contamination levels.
- Supervise operations of autoclave and cage/rack washer, also washing and cleaning activities in the animal house.
- Participate in IAEC meetings and maintain all animal house related records for inspection.
- Participate in exploratory toxicology experiments as and when required.
- Training of animal house technicians in animal breeding procedures, handling of equipments, washing and cleaning activities.
- Responsible for waste disposal (Biological/Chemical/Sharps etc) and aware of the Pollution Control Board guidelines
- Responsible for the maintenance, calibration, corrective and preventive action of Animal House equipments.
- Responsible for Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Guidance Documents and Standard Formats for Animal House and Animal Upkeep.
- Prepare and communicate all breeding records.
- Generation of historical control data from stock animals.

Desirable
- Knowledge of various rat and mice models.
- Knowledge of computerized breeding / colony management packages.
- Exposure to GLP/CPCSEA/AAALAC, import regulations for animals.
- Good communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
- Prosection and gross pathological examination.
