6 Jan 2009: BANGALORE: Post-26/11, IT companies in Bangalore are facing a new threat — hoax calls through e-mail
and telephones.

So far, five major IT companies — Infosys, Wipro, Accenture, Capgemini and Crane Software — have received e-mail threats. These mails were also forwarded to three or four national TV channels.
City police commissioner Shankar M Bidari said that till Sunday, around 15 threats through e-mail and telephone were received by various software companies
in the city. On Monday, the security staff of a software company in Indiranagar got a telephone call.

However, 14 of these threats turned out to be hoaxes. Most e-mails were sent from different cyber cafes in the city, especially those in Frazer Town and Bharatinagar areas.

Infosys Technologies director T V Mohandas Pai confirmed that an e-mail message, which was sent to 10 other IT firms, was received by Infosys too. “All of that information has been shared with the police.” He added, “But I don’t think we should blow up the issue. It looks like someone is just playing a prank. It came into our recruitment inbox.”

Wipro declined to comment. An employee of Accenture said security in the company’s facility had been beefed up substantially on Monday. “We saw this happen immediately after the Mumbai attacks. Soon they went back to their normal routine. But on Monday again, they were very tight. My laptop was checked numerous times,” the employee said.

“The calls are coming from different parts of the city, mainly from coin booths. The e-mails have been sent from different cyber cafes and three from Frazer Town area,’’ a senior police officer said.

While the police are tracing Monday’s call, they are seriously analysing an e-mail which they suspect to be genuine. However, they don’t rule out the possibility of some computer literate person using a proxy server to send the mail.

Commenting on the CISF cover that the private sector has been demanding, Pai said, “We want the CISF cover for Electronics City. We are prepared to pay whatever is required.”
