IBM wants DB2 users to migrate from Oracle
Mumbai, May 07, 2009:Having lost Sun to Oracle, Big Blue is using EnterpriseDB to make it easier for DB2 users to migrate away from the Oracle database system, essentially to push Postgres Plus.
IBM`s partnered with EnterpriseDB, the commercial backer of PostgreSQL database, to embed EnterpriseDB`s Postgres plus advanced server technology into its DB2 9.7 database product. So what is happening is EnterpriseDB`s technology basically allows applications written for the Oracle database to run on EnterpriseDB`s PostgreSQL...and now IBM`s DB2, is enabling IBM to migrate customers from the Oracle database
While IBM refused to directly comment, the company said that it is committed to delivering innovations that lower its clients` cost of managing data- right now that`s what is at the top of mind for across the industry. IBM claims its customers recognize the innovations that DB2 delivers such as data compression, XML, etc and want to take advantage of them for new and existing applications.
Bernie Spang, director (product strategy) for information management at IBM told CXOtoday, "It is our goal to make as easier as possible for them to adopt DB2, whether their applications were originally written for DB2 or not. It is important to us to help our customers/partners maintain their technology investments and ensure they can leverage their existing skills."
Spang said this includes offering DB2 Express-C for production use at no charge - with IBM support options available. As businesses and applications expand, users generally look for a way to scale their databases.
"Unfortunately many software vendors do not provide an easy migration path to do that. However with DB2 Express-C they can get started for free with an easy to use database, that fully supports interfaces like Web Services, PHP, Ruby on Rails, Django, Python, etc as well as cloud environments like Amazon EC2 and any application written for DB2 Express-C can be seamlessly run against more scalable (Workgroup, Enterprise) editions of DB2 without any changes to the application code."
While IBM speaks about how it will enable smooth transition for customers migrating to the DB2 database, T.R. Madan Mohan, managing partner at Browne and Mohan said that IBM after loosing Sun to Oracle, has upped its ante against Oracle and HP.
IBM is an investor in EnterpriseDB, and it has now embedded Enterprise DB Postress server into IBM DB2 9.7 version. Since Enterprise DB allows applications written on Oracle on Enterprise DB PostreSQL which in turn will now be hosted on DB2, IBM expects migrations from Oracle.
The reasoning is two folds, on the DB front Oracle and MS SQL has been gaining market share (often at the cost of IBM DB2, open source DB`s). IBM feels this sandwich strategy would allow it to win back some of the customers. Second, with the acquisition of MySQL by Oracle, IBM feels there is a vacuum to be exploited in the enterprise OS offerings and hence pushed this alliance.
Mohan said the strategy may not meet results as customers rarely switch DB`s (especially, ones that are hosting mission critical applications). Oracle and MySQL are well entrenched in the market and have built strong partner and ISV relationships.
Second, nothing stops Oracle to continue the enterprise version of MySQL and in fact subsidize it further to retain customers at low end. It will go after customers who may be seeking applications in cloud or hosted offerings so that the total cost is much lower. Also from a community perspective, MySQL benefits in terms in large committed developers and ISVs.
IBM appears to be trying to portray that it do without Sun. While IBM claimed it has won 100 clients in the quarter, the overall revenues in fact fell by about 20%. Moreover, IBM did not mention that majority of the IBM high-end servers had been deployed in contracts that are total outsourcing types, where the vendor bundles several components, said Mohan.
