MUMBAI: US president Barack Obama’s anti-outsourcing policy has not affected Microsoft
’s outsourcing plans. ET has learnt that the software giant
has awarded a $10-million BPO deal to India’s second-largest IT company Infosys. This is a three-year contract for back-end support such as data processing, said a person familiar with the development.

Microsoft, which has over 5,000 people on its payrolls in India, has outsourced most of its IT and development work to Bangalore-based Mindtree. It recently signed a five-year outsourcing deal with HCL Technologies
.

Infosys BPO, a subsidiary of Infosys, is also close to bagging another deal with Alcatel-Lucent. In a contract worth over $15 million and spanning over three years, the IT firm will provide back-end support to the European telecom major. Infosys declined to comment citing it was in a silent period prior to the declaration of the first quarter numbers. Both Microsoft and Alcatel-Lucent were unavailable for comments. The Alcatel-Lucent deal had already been awarded to Infosys BPO, but due to certain legal issues it did not materialise.

Following this, the telecom company floated a second request for proposal (RFP), including certain terms and conditions they had missed in the first RFP. According to an official close to the deal, Infosys BPO is close to bagging the contract.

Recently, Infosys had set up a separate unit within its BPO arm (Infosys BPO), which concentrates only on the domestic BPO market. Infosys BPO reported a revenue of $279.5 million (around Rs 1,300 crore) and net profit of $40.7 million (around Rs 190 crore) for FY09.
