IT`s missing, core firms to come to fore at engg colleges
MUMBAI:
The absence of software companies has debunked the importance of ‘day zero’ placements being reserved only for IT companies. The first day, first slot has shifted to the ‘core engineering’ companies this year across tier-1 and tier-2 engineering universities. This will allow them to select the best students, which were earlier taken up by the IT companies.
University placement officers across the country said due to the global slowdown most firms have delayed their recruitment plans. However, companies like HCC, Tata Consulting Engineers, Ashok Leyland, Mahindra & Mahindra, Indian Oil Corporation, Tamil Nadu Petrochemical Limited and others are scheduled to visit most tier-I and tier-II universities starting July end.
They typically recruit from core engineering streams like mechanical, civil engineering , production and electronics, unlike the IT companies which recruit across fields. The pay packages offered by these companies hover around the Rs 3 lakh range which is on par with industry standards.
For instance, auto major Ashok Leyland will be visiting campuses between July and September. It had recruited around 100 students last year. “We are privileged to be Day Zero recruiters in most of the reputed engineering colleges of the country and hope to recruit over 100 students this year,” said Ashok Leyland HR executive director Shekhar Arora. These students will come on board in 2010 after their graduation.
Major engineering institutes that ET spoke to said that their placements would begin in July and they had received confirmation from most engineering and manufacturing companies. Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) will kick start its placement process this week with Tata Consulting Engineers on July 24 followed by Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Ashok Leyland in August.
“We will be starting the placements in July and will go on till November. While most engineering companies have confirmed, Larsen &Toubro has said that they will be delayed in coming for recruitment. The recession has affected them marginally, since the projects are getting delayed,” said MIT associate director (placements) KJ Kamath. When contacted L&T declined to comment on its campus recruitment policy.
Another infrastructure major HCC which recruited over 150 graduates last year will be visiting campuses this year during the September-December period. However, the company declined to share its hiring numbers. “It would be worked out closer to the recruitment period,” said a spokesperson for the company.
