Glader reports that the online university, which will launch classes on Jan. 4, will be affiliated with Chancellor University in Cleveland. Steve Kerr, who previously led GE`s Leadership Development Center in Crotonville, N.Y., and the executive education program at Goldman Sachs, was named executive director.
"I wanted to work with Jack again," Glader reports Kerr as saying in a statement, noting the school will target working men and women, including entrepreneurs and veterans. "Classes will be small, students and faculty will get input from Jack, and the curriculum will be current and relevant to today`s news."
Glader says Welch estimates he is spending three to four hours a day recruiting faculty, planning the curriculum, and streamlining the course software. "We want this to be a premium school," he says.
Glader reports that Welch is paying more than $2 million for a 12 percent stake in Chancellor University System LLC, which is converting formerly bankrupt Myers University in Cleveland into Chancellor University. It plans to offer most courses online. Chancellor has named its MBA program The Jack Welch Management Institute. Noel Tichy, a professor at the University of Michigan`s Ross School of Business, and former head of GE`s Crotonville executive training program, is dean of the Welch Institute.
