Benchmarks recovered sharply but ended in the red Monday as traders covered
BSE short positions. Private sector banks and realty stocks were badly hit.

Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex closed at 9,271.92, down 113.50 points or 1.21 per cent. The 30-share index touched an intra-day high of 9435.89 and a low of 8956.68.

National Stock Exchange’s Nifty ended at 2792.95, down 0.62 per cent or 17.40 points. The broader index touched a 2694 and a high of 2835.70.

BSE Midcap Index ended 2.73 per cent down and BSE Smallcap Index declined 2.64 per cent.

Biggest Sensex gainers were Wipro (5.4%), ACC (4.4%), Tata Motors (2.85%), Maruti Suzuki (2.47%) and Infosys Technologies (2.04%).

HDFC Bank (-7.71%), Reliance Infrastructure (-6.23%), Tata Steel (-4.01%), DLF (-3.92%) and HDFC (-3.84%) were the losers.

Market breadth was negative on the BSE with 1797 losers and 683 gainers.
