Sybase delivers .NET migration path in PowerBuilder 12 beta

Sybase`s PowerBuilder 12 development environment, which was released into beta today, introduces a Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) module for migrating Win32 applications to .NET.

Sybase delivered low-level infrastructure support in PowerBuilder 11, and it is now providing visual designers for .NET application development. It will be generally available in the first half of 2010.

PowerBuilder 12 includes two design-time modules: One for building and maintaining applications in Win32 with support for .NET development, and a new WPF module that has an integrated Visual Studio 2008 shell for writing applications entirely in managed code.

A migration utility enables developers to convert Win32 applications into WPF, but the ease of migration rests on the quality of the application, as well as whether it includes any deprecated technologies such as Object Linking and Embedding controls, said Sue Dunnell, product manager for PowerBuilder.

Sybase provides reference applications for its customers to show them what steps they are required to take in common migration scenarios, she said.

The WPF module can import Visual Studio plug-ins, and developers can import controls from third-party component makers without having to understand how the controls work, Dunnell said. However, a panel is provided for manipulating AJAX code, she added.

Secondly, Sybase has rewritten its DataWindow control in managed code with native support for Windows Communication Foundation. DataWindow is the "crown jewel" of PowerBuilder, because it can access virtually any database with just a few lines of scripting, and can manipulate and display data according to business rules, Dunnell said.

"A proxy is generated for each PowerBuilder object to call methods on any remote service. [DataWindow] is a simple way to support WCF natively without needing a developer to know too much about what they are doing," she added.

Some other new features include visual inheritance for WPF windows and User Objects, and a drag-and-drop capability for access to properties and methods of controls that are graphically added to WPF windows, according to Sybase.

PowerBuilder 12 is the culmination of Sybase`s plan to phase in .NET Framework support, which began with the release of PowerBuilder 9, Dunnell said. Silverlight tooling will be added after today`s release.
